On August15th and 16th it is feast in Barga.
It is not only a religious feast: it is also celebrated with the great fair in Giardino streets .
The tradition of the fair in Barga must be ancient, even if not as old as the cult of San Rocco. From some resolutions of the municipal council in 1721 we know that on the day of San Rocco (August 16th) many foreigner people were expected in Barga. We think they came for a fair. Surely there has been a big year market since 1832.
If you want to be a real “barghigiano”, today is the good day to go and buy, as tradition, a new pan and a garlic.
They sell the garlic right at the foot of the slope that leads to our restaurant!
The painting is the Fair of Santa Maria and San Rocco, by Carlo Da Prato.
